“You’re quiet,” Nolan said.

Jack looked over from the driver’s seat to Nolan, whose enormous mass took up most of the cab to the truck. This left Paris squished up against him, and she was not looking very pleased about it.

Paris snapped a warning look at Nolan. Jack smiled, knowing she was going to punch him if Jack started singing again.

“I’m just thinking.” Jack turned on his left blinker, coming to a complete stop at the stop sign. They hadn’t seen a single car on the road in the hour they had been driving, but after stopping by accident at the first sign, he noticed that it was annoying Paris. She would look at him and motion wildly, like he was an idiot. Knowing this, Jack played the part and followed all the traffic laws, even stopping at a traffic light that was out. He stared up at it for a full sixty seconds, pretending the light was red.

“About Caleo?” Nolan asked frankly.

Jack glared out the front window. He didn’t want to talk about Caleo with Nolan, especially with Paris wedged between them in the truck’s small cab.

Nolan sighed. “Do you even have a plan? What are we going to do when we get to the Blessed camp? It’s not like we can storm in, grab Caleo, and run out. We don’t even know if he is in there yet.”

Jack didn’t even bother taking his eyes off the road as he stopped at another traffic light. He had been thinking about this most of the night and hadn’t come up with anything yet, but he wasn’t about to admit that to Nolan. Paris patted him on the arm and Jack shrugged. “I figured we would start by scoping it out.”

“They had at least fifty guards at the school. I’m sure that’s nothing compared to what the hospital will have,” Nolan explained.

Paris tugged at Jack’s sleeve again and he shrugged her off. “I could always just walk in. They helped humans at the school. Maybe they would just take me in.”

“They also killed them?”

Jack shrugged again. “Only after—” Jack was cut off as an elbow smacked him in the ribs. He slammed on the brakes, screeching the car to a halt before looking over at Paris. “What was that for?” Jack yelled.

Unfazed, she pointed out the front window to a large, eighteen story building towering behind a department store and a few restaurants. “Oh.” Jack looked up at the structure and felt crushed. It somehow looked larger than he remembered, and he didn’t think there was any way he could possibly find Caleo in a building that big.

“There is no way we are going to be able to storm into that building.” Nolan’s voice sounded as destroyed as Jack felt. “There are at least fifty guards on patrol alone.”

“We may be able to sneak in through a side door or something.” Jack jumped at the muffled voice outside his window. He turned and saw Paris’s mother leaning over, her face almost pressed against the glass.
